These essential structures to protect alpacas from harsh weather and provide them with a suitable living environment. Alpacas are domesticated South American Camelids known for their luxurious wool and gentle temperament. Adequate shelter is crucial for their well-being, especially in the winter.
Key Considerations:
Weather protection – Alpacas are sensitive to harsh weather conditions, particularly heavy rain and snow. The shelter should provide effective protection against this.
Ventilation – Whilst it should protect them against the elements, proper ventilation is needed to prevent build-up in humidity and ammonia fumes. This is why we have designed our alpaca shelters using Yorkshire board cladding, using a 22mm gap to increase airflow. Adequate ventilation is essential for the health of the animals.
Light – Providing adequate lighting in their shelters is beneficial for alpacas, natural daylight helps regulate their circadian rhythms. Skylights can be one way to achieve this, as they allow natural sunlight to enter the space, creating a more comfortable and pleasant environment for the animals.
Space – The shelter should have enough space to accommodate your alpaca herd comfortably. It’s recommended to provide 25-35 square feet per alpaca, depending on the size and the climate.
Bedding – Clean and dry bedding is advised, straw, wood shavings or pellet bedding work well for this purpose.
Feeding Area – Hay should be always supplied when the grass is limited, and freshwater should be always available. Gates can be fitted to the shelter to split alpacas when feeding hard feed.
Position – Choosing the position of the shelter; consider prevailing winds and the direction of the sun to maximise comfort for the alpacas. The shelter must be positioned in an area with adequate drainage this is essential to prevent flooding and accumulation of water around the shelter.
