Field Shelter on Skids: A modern solution for horse and livestock owners.
Introduction
One crucial aspect of horse and livestock ownership is protecting your animal from different elements. The field shelter on skids is a versatile and mobile solution, that offers numerous benefits. In this blog post, we will explore the advantages field shelters on timber or galvanised skids.
What is a field shelter on skids?
Field shelters are simple timber structures that start at 12’x12’ but can increase to the largest mobile structure of 12’x36’. This consists of a wooden frame with a roof, 3 fully cladded sides and an 8’ opening.
For our timber skids, we use 2 4×2 pieces of timber bolted together, these are then attached to the framework to create a sturdy foundation. The skids run along the front and the back of the building and act as sled-like structures. These skids enable the shelter to be towed and moved easily across the field offering flexibility and adaptation. Should you wish to purchase our standard shelter with timber skids to tow the building you may consider adding tow brackets to your order. These fix between the framework and timber skids and allow for the attachment of the towing chain. These are difficult to retro-fit therefore this item should be fitted at time of installation.
We also offer an upgrade to galvanised metal skids these are designed to be heavy-duty and recommended if you want to move the shelter multiple times. These have tow hooks welded into the ends so that you can easily connect the tow chain ready to move the shelter.
Advantages:
Mobility: One of the most obvious advantages of having a field shelter on skids is their flexibility. They can be easily towed using a large vehicle to different locations on your property, allowing you to rotate grazing areas or reposition them as needed.
Cost Effective: Installing a concrete base can be a costly endeavour therefore shelters on skids offer lower cost and less hassle solution.
Protection: These shelters provide essential protection from wind, rain, snow and can also provide shade in the summer. Our shelters as standard have a protective 2′ or 3′ overhang.
Easy Maintenance: They are relatively easy to maintain, once installed you may want to treat the building to increase the longevity. Our timber is treated green for protection against rot however treating the timber will help to repel water.
Multi-purpose: While primarily designed for livestock, field shelters can be used for a variety of different purposes. They can be used for storing hay, farm equipment, gardening tools or as a workshop space.
Conclusion
Field shelter on the skids are an indispensable addition to modern agriculture. Mobility, cost-effectiveness and versatility make them a valuable resource for providing shelter and protection to many animals. Whether you are raising young animals or need storage for hay, field shelters on skids are the perfect choice.
