Why do you need Stable Lighting?
A well lit stable is important for a number of reasons. While you might not appreciate the advantages in summer when your horse has more turnout, the shorter winter days will have you grateful for good lighting – as no one wants to be mucking out in the dark!
Stable lighting will help with skipping out early in the morning, tacking up, grooming and late night checks. With it getting dark not long after 4pm during winter, you’re almost guaranteed to be doing most of your stable tasks in the dark.
A well lit stable is also far safer, as no matter how well you know the horse, it’s best to be aware of what’s going on around you at all times.
Exterior Lights
Exterior lights are just as important as interior stable lights. Well placed lights will stop you from fumbling around trying to find the door latch, and they can also be comforting for your horse. Ensure your light switch is in an easy to reach place, and both the switch and lighting should be weatherproof.
Safety First
One of the most important things about stable lighting is safety. Whatever lights you choose, ensure they are cool burning – as bulbs that generate a lot of heat will be a fire hazard.
All bulbs should be fully enclosed so the horse can’t break them or tamper with them. A plastic safety cover is the best option, and will prevent broken glass from falling into the stable if the bulb breaks. All fixtures should be moisture proof and resistant to hot or cold temperatures.
Your lighting should be positioned high enough so that the horse cannot hit it if they rear up in their stable. There should be no exposed wires which a horse or rodent might chew on, and light switches should be kept out of the horse’s way.
Finally, it’s worth considering movement-activated lighting. This is a great security feature, as well as being more efficient. Our Solar Mate Security Light is a great option if you’re after movement activated lighting.

Runtimes
We also use SmartTimeTM technology to increase the run time and efficiency of our lighting. This auto timer will turn the light on at dusk and off again after 6 hours of operation. This gives you perfect lighting night after night, with minimal effort needed on your part.
Our Solar Lighting Solutions
Solar Hub 16
The Solar Hub 16 is one of our most popular lighting and power kits. It’s ideal if you have no grid connection, using a high efficiency solar panel and a bright 300 lumen LED bulb to illuminate your stable. It’s easy and safe to install.
While the lack of winter sun is a big concern for those with solar lighting, the Solar Hub 16 panel collects ample light during the course of the day (even during the notoriously dismal British winter!). The bulb can be powered for 2 hours in the winter, and 7 hours during the rest of the year – more than enough time to complete your stable tasks.
Solar Hub 64
For larger stables or multiple rooms, the Solar Hub 64 is perfect. It has more power and can deliver up to 6 hours of lighting at night. It can also be used to power stable fans and other heavy duty appliances.
Like the Solar Hub 16, this unit is easy to install with no complicated wiring. It can be used in stables, shelters or even taken with you in the lorry while competing. Plus, it comes with an expansion pack for even larger areas.
