Metal Roofing VS Bitumen Roofing

STEEL VS BITUMEN ROOFING

Metal roofing vs Bitumen Sheets – When it comes to roofing, it is a minefield! We understand that our customers are faced with questions about what is the best roofing for their Stables/Shelter or American Barn? How long it will last? Is it strong? We recognise that selecting the right roofing material plays in the overall integrity of the building.

While we have a range of bespoke roofing on offer, our unequivocal preference is our premium plastisol-coated steel with anti-condensation lining. Renowned for its exceptional quality and performance. It delivers a range of advantages from installation, maintenance and endurance.

This product is specifically developed by our supplier, Thomas Panels to offer excellent lifetime performance.  They specify a life expectancy of 15-25 years, although they believe this could be far longer.  The coating manufacturer’s lifespan guarantee is conditional upon ongoing treatment and cleaning. We have used this product for several years without any issues or concerns.

Let’s Compare:

Durability

  • Metal roof sheets are known for their durability and longevity. They are resistant to various weather conditions including heavy rain, snow and UV exposure. Metal roofs can last for a lot longer with proper maintenance.
  • Bitumen sheets while durable have a shorter lifespan compared to metal. They may need to be replaced more frequently, especially in areas with extreme weather conditions, as they may be more prone to wear and tear over time.

Maintenance

  • Metal roofs generally require less maintenance than Bitumen. Metal is resistant to rot, insects and mildew. Additionally, metal roofs often have a smooth surface that sheds debris more easily. They also can be washed and waxy tree sap can be removed.
  • Bitumen sheets require more frequent maintenance such as resealing or coating with water-resistant material. They can be susceptible to damage from UV rays and may need more attention to prevent deterioration.

Long-Term Costs

  • Metal roofs have a higher initial cost, their longer lifespan and lower maintenance needs can make them more cost-effective in the long run.
  • Bitumen sheets are a budget-friendly option upfront, but need more frequent replacements due to sagging and tearing after some time.

Aesthetic and Style

  • We offer our roofing in a standard selection of colours, offering a range of design options.

Ultimately, the choice between metal roofing sheets and bitumen depends on your specific needs, budget and preferences. If longevity and lower long-term costs are a priority, metal roofing is a better investment. However, if the upfront costs are a more significant concern and you are willing to perform regular maintenance bitumen roofing sheets may be a suitable option.
